Matthiasson Napa Valley White Wine 2017
Napa Valley, California, United StatesThis Napa white blend was inspired by the wines of numerous European regions: Friuli, Rhone, Burgundy, Alsace, Graves.... It makes more sense when you see the blend of 50 percent sauvignon blanc, 25 percent ribolla gialla, 20 percent semillon, and 5 percent tocai friulano, from two vineyards in the southern, fog-cooled part of the valley. After whole cluster pressing, all four varieties were blended and rested on lees for 10 months in Boutes barrels (20% new), with no stirring and no MLF. The White is held in bottle for at least a year before release. Pine nuts and almonds lead the medium bodied palate, one lined with a honeyed waxiness. White peach, honeysuckle, bitter melon, and river stone fill in the gaps, finishing with a light trickle of ginger spice. Lots to unpack here, and fun to keep returning to the bottle over an evening.
