Fort Berens Meritage Reserve 2017

British Columbia, CanadaThis year's Reserve Meritage is led by cabernet sauvignon with merlot and cabernet franc filling out the rear. The cabernet sauvignon is Similkameen-sourced, while the others come from Fort Beren’s estate vineyards in Lillooet. Thankfully, unlike others under the reserve grey label tier, this employs no apassimento stylings. The ferment is traditional with all three kept separate in stainless steel before ageing in French and American oak for ten months – followed by the assemblage or blending. Dark cherry drives this full, savoury edged palate, drawing along tobacco, pencil shavings, cassis and black plums in its wake. Tannins are finely grippy, well-positioned to direct the youthful fruit. The finish lingers with cracked peppercorns. A well-handled reserve red, drinking well now, especially with Sunday roast beef.Tasted: 03 December 2019Tasted by: Treve Ring & Anthony GismondiPrices:
