Gini Tenuta Scajari Le Mattoline Valpolicella Superiore 2013

Verona, Veneto, ItalyThe 2013 is the first commercial release of the wine. The vineyard was planted in 2000, though they waited until it was certified organic, and also until they were happy with their efforts before release. This is a blend of corvina, corvinone, rondinella, and oseleta from south-east Valpo's Campiano - Località Lopio area, 400-600m altitude, and calcareous clay / volcanic-seasoned soils. After a native ferment and MLF in stainless, this moved to seasoned French oak for two years of rest, and then back to stainless for a final year before bottling without filtration. Give this well-thought out wine some respect with a decant, or open a day in advance. The richer, full palate benefits from stretching, to reveal crushed black plum, wild blackberry, leather seasoned with rosemary, violet leaves, anise, and salted thyme. Tannins are scratchy and ample, though thankfully worn with time. Drinking beautifully now (after that aforementioned decant), and especially with roasted rabbit, lamb, or mushroom dishes. 2400 bottles produced, and 60 bottles imported into Canada.Tasted: 03 November 2019Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
