Road 13 Viognier 2017

Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaAromas of stone fruit, banana, and vanilla signal a viognier with a wood (and slight smoke) treatment. It is true that this grape is sometimes oaked in its Northern Rhône homeland, but only for the most opulent-fruited. Road 13 has chosen fruit from the excellent, low-cropped Blind Creek Vineyard in the mineral-rich Similkameen Valley, whole-bunch pressed, then fermented in 33% new French oak casks. There is a flavour push-pull on the palate, with orange and peach vying with coconut and vanilla oak. The result is a a rich, ripe, and full wine, with creamy weight and texture. The impression of sweetness is accentuated by soft acidity, and the oak erases a hoped-for minerally finish. Pair the fruit/oak power with a juicy porkchop with apricot glaze, or grilled prosciutto-wrapped mango slices.Tasted: 31 October 2019Tasted by: DJ KearneyPrices:
