Hermitage, Northern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceErmitage L'Ermite is a standalone wine representing the best of the hill of Hermitage and Chapoutier's grandest crus. The vines average over 80 years and the yields are minuscule. Look for peppery, spicy, black cherry, smoky, gamey, prune aromas laced with garrigue. The attack is powerful but elegant with a layer of complexity that persistent throughout the wine as you drink it. It is something special and not to be missed. The palate is awash in black cherry, liquorice, and minerality. It's bolder than La Meal but in the right way. It is a dissertation in syrah. Ermitage L'Ermite Rouge is 100 percent syrah, all hand-harvested from 3.8 acres atop the Hermitage hill, entirely destemmed and vinified in a small, concrete vat. Maceration runs five to six weeks before the free run juice is transferred into new or one year old barrels to be matured for 18 to 20 months.
