Gérard Bertrand Clos d'Ora 2013
Minervois la Liviniere, Minervois, Languedoc, Sud de France, FranceClos d'Ora is an emerging Languedoc superstar red from La Livinière, in the Minervois. The nine hectare stone-walled vineyard already contained old vine carignan and grenache, and Bertrand added syrah and mourvèdre and switched the farming to biodynamic. At 220 metres above sea level, the chalk, sandstone, and marl soils are cultivated by horses, and the grape varieties harvested and macerated separately in concrete before heading to French oak for twelve months. This older version has aged quietly, allowing its savoury black fruit flavours to mellow and become one with the liquorice and garrigue notes of the countryside. It is designed to cellar a decade or more until the full picture is revealed, so there is still plenty of time for this wine to strut its stuff. Clos d'Ora, the Latin ora-ae for word, prayer, contained between the Alpha and the Omega, is the symbolic beginning and end of all things.
