River Stone Cabernet Franc 2017
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaFrom 15-year-old estate grown vines, the fruit was destemmed and only partially crushed prior to fermentation. The wine was then aged 14 months in French oak (33 percent new) prior to bottling. There’s no second guessing that this is cabernet franc: the first notes out of the glass are dusty black raspberry, dried herbs, and perfumed spices. The oak is present, but it doesn’t overwhelm the fruit. Plus, there’s an undercurrent of stony minerality that may (or may not) be reflective of their rocky terroir. I love this fresher style of cabernet franc that retains the varietal purity. However, the tannins could be slightly better managed, as there's some grittiness to the finish. It seems like River Stone continues to fly under the radar, but they shouldn't.Tasted: 22 September 2019Tasted by: Geoffrey Moss MWPrices:BC | $27.90 | 750ml | winery direct, private wine shops |
