Mayer Bloody Hill Pinot Noir

Mayer Bloody Hill Pinot Noir 2018

Yarra Valley, Victoria, AustraliaUnlike most of Timo Mayer's wines, this doesn't employ whole bunch fermentation. After destemming this organic pinot, grown between 300-470m on Bloody Hill's rocky volcanic soils, this fermented over three weeks on skins and was aged in French oak barriques, 30% new, for three months. Timo's slogan is 'bring back the funk', and this certainly has it, with earthy moss, sour cherries and a small wave of reduction upon first opening. The core is soft, downy, and red-fruited, and thankfully a tight rivulet of buzzy acidity carries this to the saline finish. There is an evident light touch under all the funk. This benefits from a chill and needs to open up in a decanter or over an evening.Tasted: 27 August 2019Tasted by: Treve RingPrices: BC 48.00 private wine shops Producer: Timo MayerDistributors: Sur Lie
