Phantom Creek Estates Phantom Creek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaA follow-up tasting would suggest this wine this wine is holding steady. The vines planted at Phantom Creek Vineyard in 2006 by viticulturist Richard Cleave are now two decades old, and are clearly coming into their own. In all, there are three clones on the site which adds to the complexity of the wine and the flexibility afforded the winemaker, especially when you consider how challenging it is to ripen cabernet sauvignon so far north. 2016 was a great year for grapes in BC, and this wine reflects the quality of that vintage. The fruit was picked Oct 2 and matured 18 months in 80 percent new French oak. The nose is bright with intense cassis mixed with plums and chocolate, but this wine is all about finesse and texture – a rare quality in all but the rarest cabernet sauvignon that begin life balanced and stay that way for decades in the bottle. As I said before, look out Napa; this is how it’s done up north. An impressive first effort.
