Zena Crown Slope Pinot Noir 2015
Oregon, United StatesSourced from several blocks within Zena Crown Vineyard, the 2016 is clone 667 coming off vines that are about a dozen years old. It’s aged 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 75-90 percent are new depending on the year. Winemaker Shane Moore likes a high percentage of new oak with medium and medium-plus toast levels because ‘new barrels breathe, permitting more oxygen ingress than wine-soaked neutral wood, and we can limit excess reduction without racking the wines. After a year and a half in oak, the wines only move once: into the bottle.” The south facing Slope block produces a big powerful style that needs more time in the bottle. The wine is savoury, the fruit is dark and spicy with more forest floor, cedar, mushroom than juicy fruit. One to age for five to seven years. Jackson Family Wines purchased the Zena Crown Vineyard, just west of Salem, in 2013 and work with winemakers Tony Rynders and Shane Moore.
