G. D. Vajra Barbera d'Alba 2016
Piedmont, ItalyG.D. Vajra was established in 1972 and named after Aldo Vaira's father, Giuseppe Domenico Vajra. Aldo's wines are all about pristine flavours. The fruit grows at some 400 metres above sea level in the village of Vergne in the commune of Barolo. Considered a traditionalist, Vaira balances old-style winemaking methods with modern techniques, namely temperature-controlled ferments. Vajra Barbera d’Alba comes from a variety of Vajra estate vineyards, belonging to three different geological ages: Tortonian, Serravallian and Messinian. Each parcel is individually fermented for an average time of 15 to 20 days with atypical gentle punch downs and cap rinsing for longer periods. It’s aged a minimum of 12 months, mostly in stainless steel vats, with a minimum contribution aged in French oak between five to ten percent. Violets rule the roost of this spicy, almost rich red berry fruit wine that spills across the palate with elegance. Drink now with classic steak tartare or cellar there to five years.Tasted: 07 September 2018Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $32.99 | 750ml | BCLS |
