Rodney Strong Pinot Noir Reserve 2015
Russian River, Sonoma County, California, United StatesThe RS Reserve used to be a mix of individually selected lots from sites across the Russian River Valley, but the 2015 is the first to be gleaned solely off Jane’s Vineyard (since 2008) and most of it is from the go-to Crinella block. A short crop (some 2 tons to the acre) has intensified the fruit flavours but it’s the texture and weight that makes this wine special. It balances the richness of its Russian River terroir and the delicacy of pinot noir. A smoky, spicy, luscious style but with the appropriate acidity to keep the finish fresh, light and wrapped in silky tannins. Aging in French oak for 14 months but only 20 percent new, has made a big difference.
