Tedeschi Amarone della Valpolicella 2012

Pedemonte Valpolicella, Verona, Veneto, ItalyFrom grapes harvested in various hilly clay/limestone vineyards (Mezzane and Tregnago hills) across Valpo, this is a blend of corvina, corvinone, rondinella, rossignola, oceleta, negara and dindarella vines averaging 20 years in age. The grapes are racked and dried for four months before a gentle press, a two-month ferment, a three-year stay in Slavonian oak, and a six-month stint in a bottle after blending and bottling. Leathery blackcurrant and ripe plum are imbued with a twiney thread and tarry undercurrent, which seasons the full, potent core and leads to a humming and lengthy finish. The heft (not negligible at 16 percent) is surprisingly lifted with a wispy cloud of acidity and bracketed with gritty tannins. A serious lens to modern Amarone Classico, a wine that has often become a caricature. Lay this down.Tasted: 25 September 2017Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
