Raen Winery Raen Royal St. Robert Cuvée Pinot Noir 2015

United StatesCarlo and Dante Mondavi have deep roots in the wine business, influenced from a very young age by their father Tim Mondavi and their grandfather Robert Mondavi. Tim Mondavi was a pinot pioneer back in the 1970s and as good as some of those wines were, well to hack an old phrase, you ain’t seen nothing yet. My initial tasting of the Raen (Research Agricultural Enology Naturally) wines was so exciting at first I thought maybe these wines may have been from somewhere else. All three labels use the same techniques (The ferment is 75 percent whole cluster using native yeasts and the juice is aged 10 months in neutral 60-gallon French oak before it is bottled without fining or filtration) to put the emphasis on place. The Raen Royal St. Robert Cuvée is a best barrels bottling that offers a solid overview of the cool Sonoma Coast, not to mention some beautiful silky tannins. Floral notes over wild strawberries and perfectly ripe Bing cherries disappear into a savoury, stony, forest floor and black tea finish. The Mondavis liken the whole cluster and using lots of stems technique to leaving the bone in when you cook a steak. Along with better flavour you are raising the Ph and lifting the fragrance.
