Garzón Estate Tannat 2014

UruguayOne of the best 100 percent tannat wines I have ever tasted, and it begins with the texture and balance. Alberto Antonini is well known for his love of concrete – in this case, the tannat spends six months in 150 hectolitre concrete tanks followed by six months on the lees. It then spends another six months in neutral French oak barrels and untoasted casks. Those who know Antonini know that he loves concrete because "It provides an environment for any living organisms to live. It's where all the microbiology that what we want lives, and we want to welcome them." Garzón started with barrels to age, but they quickly realized it wasn't the best tool for the fruit. So today, the cellar is filling up with large untoasted casks to protect the original flavours and aromatics of the fruit. "It's nothing new we are just going back to the early days of winemaking." Again the texture is like no other, so soft and supple with richness and depth and elegance seldom encountered in South America. In 2014, a cooler year spawned more red than black fruit flavours with a dusting of white pepper and dried herbs. Energy is a great word to use here, reflecting the vibrant, fresh, juicy red with dense supple tannins. Grilled meats are a must.Tasted: 29 December 2016Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
