Rainoldi Inferno Valtellina Superiore 2008
Valtellina, Lombardy, ItalyLight brick in hue, this chiavennasca (nebbiolo) comes from the smallest and rockiest subzone of Valtellina Superiore, stretching over a series of terraces, high in the Alps. Black cherry, rust, blood, dried cherry, medicinal herbs and dusty earth are carried along fine tannins and a stream of bright acidity, lightly textured and finishing as it started, with rust and blood. This is not about fruit, and it's a beauty for it. After stainless steel ferment, this rests twenty months in Slavonian oak before another nine months in bottle.
