Va Piaño Vineyards Portteus 2012

Horse Heaven Hills, Columbia Valley, Washington, United StatesFrom the second oldest planting of syrah in Washington State, this is 22-year-old vines from a 1.5 acre block of Portteus Vineyard in Rattlesnake Hills AVA. Sixteen months in French oak (50 percent new) provides the strident oak backbone, while 400 metres altitude and volcanic ash and clay loam provide precision and acidity to the plush, desert-ripened fruit. Ripe cherry, brambled blackberry and dense plum is varnished with a layer of anise tar and supported by ample sticky tannins. The finish is long with subtle sweet smoke and black pepper, welcoming pairing with a rich porterhouse steak or a couple more years in the cellar.Tasted: 29 August 2016Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
