Matello Pinot Gris 2012

Willamette Valley, Oregon, United StatesTo me, this wine shows why Oregon pinot gris is a "thing". Granted, it's not nearly always this good. But in the skilled hands of Matello winemaker Marcus Goodfellow, pinot gris achieves greatness in the Willamette. Here, from dry-farmed, high, cool blocks of Whistling Ridge and Bishop Creek Vineyards grapes averaging twenty years are harvested, rest on skins for a day and then into a mix of stainless, microporous polymer tanks and neutral barrels before a stint on lees for six months. Honey, pear, subtle wildflowers and a shear of grapefruit pith acidity are complexed with shimmering acidity and textured with stony, smoky savoury notes. The lengthy finish ends with a welcome bitter pear skin / almond twist. Drinking beautifully now, but will go a few more years in the cellar still (wishing I had more in mine).Tasted: 07 April 2016Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
