Fuego Blanco Malbec Cabernet Franc 2012

San Juan, ArgentinaAt 13.8% alcohol it opens with elegance and confidence. It is an unusual co-fermentation 90/10 malbec/cabernet franc. The vineyard was planted and maintained by Eddy del Popolo using a local selection of malbec and a malbec clone from Mendoza that was sent to Davis, cleaned up, then sent to Italy before it was sent back. The Pedernal Valley is a sub-region located in the south of San Juan some 100km north of the city of Mendoza. The Andes lie to the west; the rocky, poor-quality soils glacial in origin are dotted with flat, dark stones that give the valley its name, pedernal being the Spanish term for flint. Poor soils, low yields it is a pattern. This wine is all about freshness and complexity. The spice is also in check letting the stony mineral fruit dominate. No comparison to modern commercial malbec.Tasted: 24 July 2015Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
