Golden Mile Bench, Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaCertainly one of the best BC white wines I have tasted in a while from the standpoint of I would like to drink the whole bottle. The inaugural release of Unicus joins a handful of wines made in Canada with grüner veltliner. Grown at 595m (Margaret's Bench) on minimal soils of mostly schist, the Triggs family has a winner with this spare, stony, spicy peppery white. The mint/sage garrigue of the south Okanagan permeates the back end which finishes crisp and fresh. This is a delicious food wine. Pascal Madevon keeps the winemaking simple using only a basket press, a stainless steel ferment and minimal lees contact before bottling at six months. Golden Mile Bench, Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe 2013 was not only the winery's first release of this cool and hip Austrian white grape, but the first Okanagan release of GV. Unicus is 100% grüner, from the high altitude (600m) Margaret's Bench vineyard on the Golden Mile Bench. Kudos to winemaker Pascal Madevon, for his interpretation of this charismatic grape (and the first white wine he's made in over a decade!). Expressive spicy persimmon, pear and herbal meadow flowers on the nose entices to an oily, waxy palate with citrus, white pepper, wild mint, pear and grapefruit pith vibrancy on the finish. This is a big wine (14%) but all the Golden Mile's warmth is tempered by bracing acidity. Only 60 cases were made, so if you see it, try it.Tasted: 28 December 2014Tasted by: Prices:
