Joseph Drouhin Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc 1er Cru 2010
Beaune, Côte de Beaune, Côte d'Or, Burgundy, FranceThe nose is exquisite quietly mixing floral and spicy notes with tightly wound green pear and nectarine aromas. The attack is similar in flavour with some tightly wound minerality, salt and crushed stone, honey/hazelnut and lots of citrus. Clos des Mouches blanc needs time, it can live a decade with ease but 15 to 20 years is possible in great vintages. The journey has just begun. The vineyard sits at the southern end of the Beaune appellation, mid-slope facing east/south east. The Drouhin site at 14 hectares is the largest in the appellation. The site was once home to bee-hives and mouches à miel (honey flies) the origin of Clos des Mouches. The clay and limestone site is planted to equal parts of chardonnay and pinot noir – average age of vines is 45 years old and the cultivation has been organic since 1990 and bio-dynamic (not certified) since the mid-90s. Today there are from 10,000 to 12,500 vines per hectare.
