Feudo Maccari Saia 2009

Sicily, ItalySette Ponte owner Antonio Moretti and his daughter Monika pieced together 30 small properties in the Noto area of Sicily and now have 120 ha of land and some 50 ha of vineyard planted at Feudo Maccari is just outside the village of Paccino. Saia, named after the irrigation channels the Moors built in the 9th and 10th Century is a selection of the best fruit and barrels and is a stylish Sicilian red. Look for fragrant dry black fruit and spice with a mix of red cherry fruit, dried herbs bitter chocolate and well-managed oak. The fruit is ripe but there is excellent acid balance. The vines are currently 20 to 30 years old sitting over a volcanic mix of white sand, stones and chalk. Impressive. Tasted: 04 October 2012Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
