Sterling Vineyards Merlot Reserve 1999
Napa Valley, California, United StatesWe don't throw a lot points away so pay attention this is great bottle of merlot and one of few that respects the variety. Look for a minty, saddle leather, plum jam nose flecked with peppery, chocolate, vanilla, cardamom, black olive and cedar notes. It is rich, round and very concentrated on entry with ripe, grainy tannins. Huge vanilla, chocolate, coffee, plum jam flavours mix effortlessly with a minty, olive, peppery clove undercurrent. The finish is smooth and long streaked with sweet vanilla and black plums. Excellent effort from a winery that seems to have been lost in the Seagram shuffle in Canada.Prices:BC | $79.95 | 750ml |

Wow we love the big spicy, buttery vanilla, coffee/Christmas pudding, nose streaked with peppery, black cherry jam. Three palms is so rich and smooth but it still has considerable grip and tannins in the finish perhaps it's the 12 per cent added cabernet sauvignon and nine per cent petite verdot. Drinkable now but should improve over the next 2-4 years.Prices:BC | $64.95 | 750ml |

Varietal blocks are being planted, a practice pioneered by Cockburn's in the region. Rich, concentrated style but not too sweet with fiery entry. Noticeable tannins with good acidity. Dryer entry with earthy, very peppery, spicy, black plum jam, cherry, floral, licorice flavours. Woodbridge Portacinco 1995
Lodi, Central Valley, California, United StatesThe '95 Portacinco is a blend of five traditional Portuguese grape varieties planted around the winery at Woodbridge. It took three years to obtain enough budwood to graft onto rootstocks but the vineyard was completed in 1988 and is now one of the largest vineyards of these varieties in the state. Each variety is barrel-aged separately in small, French and American oak barrels for only two years to enhance the texture and emphasize fruit character. Look for spicy, nutty, rancio, blackberry, and steeped tea aromas. Rich and quite sweet with chocolate, caramel, raisin/walnut, rancio flavours and a smoky tea and tobacco on the finish. Slightly tannic with some grip. The wines are blended and bottled without fining or filtration and aged after bottling for an additional two years before release.Prices:AB | $19.00 | 750ml |
