Marchesi Pancrazi Pinot Noir 1999
Tuscany, ItalyThe story of is unusual to say the least. In 1975, 3,300 vines identified as Sangiovese were planted on the Marchesi Pancrazi estate's clayey/schistous soil. The grapes were vinified as Sangiovese and anonymously blended into the everyday family wine. Since little is expected of sangiovese in this region few people thought much of the wine... until 1989, when a Bordeaux-educated friend of Vittorio and Cristina Pancrazi, wine-maker Niccolò D'Afflitto, determined the sangiovese they were growing was actually pinot noir. When you smell this Tuscan pinot and its spicy vanilla compost nose with barnyard undertones you also detect some characteristic black cherry fruit. Its round light and soft on the palate with mostly earthy compost flavours and only a dusting of cherry fruit flavours. More of a curiosity than anything else. In this case we prefer Sonoma County pinot at $30 less.Prices:BC | $56.50 | 750ml |
