Robert Mondavi Pinot Noir Private Selection 2001
Central Coast, California, United StatesPrivate Selection is the replacement label for the Coastal series which at least in the eyes of the Mondavi team had lost its appeal with so many other wineries using the coastal term. If you ask us Private Selection has to rank among the lamest wine monikers in the business rivalling the likes of Proprietor's Reserve and Vintner's Reserve. As for the latest edition look for a spicy barnyard nose with a sweet cherry smoky mint leaf nose. Its round and soft on entry but the fruit is dry and slightly astringent in the aftertaste. Smokey black cherry flavours and that pinot rootsy character mark the aftertaste. A solid pinot that will shine with the likes of duck cassoulet.Prices:BC | $19.99 | 750ml |

Mission Hill Family Estate Oculus 1999
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaIntense black cherry, black pepper nose with streaks of coffee. Firm lean texture with good acid and leafy, cranberry/toffee, oak flavours. The finish is dry and tannic at this point but it will soften up. The balance is there. Re-tasted in 2015 and there isn't much left. Dry and hard with bell pepper resonating and plenty of acid showing through. The highest percentage ever of cabernet sauvignon but it appears to have been too much for the blend. Drink up. The blend is 22/58/20 merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc; 12 months in 57 percent new French oak: 61 percent Osoyoos 30 percent Oliver fruit.Prices:BC | $35.00 | 750ml |
