Veramonte Primus 1996

Valle de Casablanca, Region de Aconcagua, ChilePrimus is Vermonte's ode to carménère, a distinctive grape that originated in France but which has found a permanent home in Chile. Once widely planted in Bordeaux, carménère was all but wiped off the European wine map after the phylloxera outbreak in the 1880s. The good news is sometime prior to its extinction the vine (also known as grande vidure and grande carmenet) was carried to Chile. The bad news is it was misidentified as merlot for over a century. The confusion probably stems from its textures (soft) and it's somewhat vegetative flavours (if it is not properly ripened). Look for a deep cherry purple colour. Dill weedy spicy cedar aroma. Somewhat hot but rich round and good concentration. Still weedy and dill flavours in the finish. A matter of style and could be linked to the Carmenère component in the blend.Tasted: 01 May 1999Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
