I was glad to have a bit of a pause between Anthony's Top 10 most memorable bottles of 2018, out earlier this month, and releasing my personal list.
It's not that I needed more time to think of the top bottles I posted on GOW last year; that's easy. It's because, in the interim, we released details about our long-planned Real Wine program. As we explained in the launch, there's no easy way to define Real Wine, save for these are wines that stick with you, skip your heart a beat, keep you thinking about the progression in the glass, and the progression in your own perspective.
For me, the latter point is why it was so easy to come up with 10 memorable wines from last year (ok, yes, there were many, many more). It has nothing to do with price point, or score. These are wines that shifted my reality of wine, in some way or another. As someone who tastes thousands of wines annually, my biggest thrill is when I learn something new: new regions, grapes, producers, soils, traditions, flavours... All to thankfully remind me always to remain humble in the face of wine.
I've big gratitude for the ten wines below, the producers who made them, and the people that shared them. These are distinctly indelible vinous memories that make me incredibly excited to taste what's ahead in 2019, and communicate my findings with readers who care.
