Quinta do Vale Meão was an early purchase of the savvy Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira. The property exchanged hands in 1877 and has remained in the family ever since. Currently it is under the command of Francisco Olazabal, the former head of A.A. Ferreira who was familiar with the property that more often than not yielded fruit destined for Barca Velha, a legendary Douro red made at a time when no other dry Douro wines were considered viable. Olazabal left Ferreira in the late 1990s to operate Meão independently with his son Xito. Meão boasts just over 60 hectares with a mix of soils each planted to specific varieties. Key varieties include touriga nacional, tinta roriz, touriga francesa, tinta amarela, tinta barroca and tinto cão. Look for a deep black cherry colour. Big spicy, black pepper, black licorice, black raspberry jam and kirsch aromas with some tobacco, orange compote and black tea streaks. Rich, fat, intense and sweet with great acidity and big ripe tannins. Explosive black cherry jam, plum, black berry and chocolate flavours with a peppery, floral, bright candied orange peel finish. Very warm and intense fruit but very long and elegant for a port. Fine finesse and balance for the long haul. Cellar 15 to 30 years.
