Chef/Restaurateur Bruno Marti Wins Vancouver Arts Award

Marti began his career as a 15-year old apprentice in Switzerland, moving to Puerto Rico and then to Canada in his early twenties where he cooked at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal. After four years he became Executive Chef of the well-known La Salle Hotel. He joined Cara Operations Airline Catering Division for a further four years as Executive Chef.

Mr. Marti was appointed manager of catering for Canadian Pacific Airlines in 1972, a position he held for 12 years. Since 1980, he has been the chef and owner of La Belle Auberge Restaurant in Ladner, BC. The menu at this renowned establishment reflects Mr. Marti's philosophy that dining should be a culinary adventure. This personal perspective has had telling effect on the development of Canada's culinary teams over the past 20 years.

Mr. Marti's first experience in international competition came as captain of the Western Canadian Team that competed in Frankfurt in 1976 at the World culinary Olympics. Over the ensuing years, he has made valuable contributions to Canada's regional and national culinary teams as both a member and as manager. And while every medal has been cause for celebration and another benchmark of accomplishment, the highlight for Mr. Marti was the 1984 World Culinary Olympics, when, as a member of Team Canada, they outshone 32 other national teams to
become the first Canadian team in history to win a World Championship. Since 1976, Mr. Marti has been part of teams that won many other medals in international competitions.

In 1980, Mr Marti founded Team Vancouver - now Team British Columbia. This team of young culinarians from around the province competes on the world stage promoting Canadian and British Columbian talent and products. They learn and prepare to eventually represent Canada on its National Culinary Team.

In a quarter century of sharing his experience, talents and insights, Mr. Marti's contributions have been distinguished and significant. Both the Canadian Culinary Federation and the British Columbia Chefs Association have awarded him many accolades including "Chef of the Year". He has also been the recipient of the Canadian Medal of Tourism Award after winning the World Culinary Olympics in 1984. He has been an international judge, including judge for the prestigious Bocuse d'Or Competition for many years.

From his perspective, Mr. Marti is especially proud of the role he has been able to play in furthering world-wide exposure of Canadian food products, having said: "The culinary diversity of our country provided wonderful opportunities for adventurous and distinctive menus.Competing internationally has broadened the awareness of what Canada has to offer and fostered growing interest in our unique cuisine." Part of this role resulted in his founding the Culinary Arts Foundation of British Columbia - the funding arm for all culinary events in BC; he is now its chairman.

Mr. Marti is currently the president of the Canadian Culinary Federation.

He is chef and owner of La Belle Auberge Restaurant: a Mobile four- star culinary experience
with classic French cuisine is situated in a 100-year-old heritage house in the small country town of Ladner. He takes great pleasure in training young and willing apprentices in the culinary arts.
