How hot is hot. Apparently, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in '03 it was a scorcher. With alcohol soaring it was important to get the right mix of grapes to avoid making monster reds and cooked flavours. Tomas Perrin says less grenache and no syrah is what was needed to reach the right temperament in 2003 and to that end Beaucastel offers up considerable bright, spicy raspberry fruit on the nose. Very rich on the palate, huge grip with firm tannins. Beaucastel boasts a large percentage of mourvèdre and grenache, about 30% each with 10 per cent syrah and another five per cent of muscardin, vaccarese and cinsault. The remainder is made up of small quantities of the seven other varieties permitted in Châteauneuf du Pape. Rich pepper finish. An impressive red that will hold comfortably through 2013 and remain vital through 2020. |
