Bouq' Émisairre is a raw milk, ash covered ripened goats milk cheese from the famous Montreal cheese maker Pierre-Yves Chaput.  In contrast the the dark exterior that is a result of olive wood ash and some aging, the interior is snow white with a light creamy texture that almost crumbles because it is so delicate.  The flavour has a refined minerally tang to it.  The name Bouq' Émisairre literally means "Scapegoat".

90 Vina Litoral Ventolera Sauvignon Blanc 2006

Valle de Leyda, Valle de San Antonio, Region de Aconcagua, Chile

BC $19.99 specialty listing

Year two at Vina Litoral and winemaker Ignacio Recabarren is on a role. Grassy, green apple skin, grapefruit, nettle, bell pepper and spicy, floral aromas mark this white made from 4 different clones harvested at different maturities. The entry is ripe but with finesse and a touch of oiliness. The flavours mix nettle, bell pepper, pepper, gooseberry and grapefruit rind with bits of butter and honey. Crisp, round finish. Excellent intensity and fine new 'Leyda' style.

89 Paul Dolan Sauvignon Blanc (Organic) 2006

Mendocino County, California, United States

AB $22.00 fine wine shops; BC $26.00 speculative listing - Calibrium International; ON $20.00 Vintages - September 2007

Green melon, grapefruit rind, grassy, orange blossom aromas. Ripe, round, fresh, slightly oily palate with grassy, nettle, grapefruit rind, butter and gooseberry flavours. Good intensity and balance with just a touch of heat on the finish. Impressive organic sauvignon.

89 Sauvignon Republic Russian River Sauvignon Blanc 2005

Russian River, Sonoma County, California, United States

AB $24.95 private wine shop; US $18.00 suggested retail

Love the 'still fresh' character one and half year-old screwcap finished sauvignon that is long on the citrus mineral, and gooseberry flavours. There are bits of grapefruit rind and grassy undertones in the finish of a perfect food wine. Is this an aberration or is California finally getting it? Pair with endless amounts of seafood, chicken dishes and even pork. Anywhere a squeeze of lemon is required. Drink up.

89 Anakena Sauvignon Blanc Single Vineyard 2006

Valle de San Antonio, Region de Aconcagua, Chile

BC $17.50 speculative listing - AnaRona Wines

Passion fruit, grapefruit rind, floral, canned jalapeno and pear aromas. Ripe, round, crisp and elegant. Good fresh passion fruit, grapefruit, granny smith, jalapeno, nectarine flavours with a touch of guava. A tad warm but very good flavour concentration with some finesse and length. Well made, very attractive style for current consumption.

89 Santa Rita Floresta Sauvignon Blanc 2006

Valle de Leyda, Valle de San Antonio, Region de Aconcagua, Chile

AB $19.95; BC $25.99 specialty

Passion fruit, grapefruit rind, mineral, floral, lime, smoky slate aromas. Round, ripe, elegant and fresh palate but broad with a hint of sweetness. Ripe granny smith, passion fruit, grapefruit, jalapeno, mineral flavours with a chalky, nectarine finish. Very good fruit intensity if a tad warm.

Ripe passion fruit, gooseberry, butter, kiwi aromas with a slightly smoky, grassy edge. Round, soft, elegant and clean with grassy, grapefruit, passion fruit, smoky apple flavours with a hint of artichoke. Crisp and balanced with persistent fruit on the finish. Good value.

88 Huia Sauvignon Blanc 2006

Marlborough, South Island, New Zealand

BC $24.99

A blend of several vineyard sites, it has a big gooseberry, passion fruit, grassy, grapefruit nose with a bit of asparagus and spearmint. Round, dry and elegant and very crisp. Gooseberry, minty, grassy, grapefruit flavours with a touch of bell pepper at the end. Solid, elegant style for food that will benefit from a year or 2 in bottle.

88 Errazuriz Sauvignon Blanc Casablanca 2005

Valle de Casablanca, Region de Aconcagua, Chile

BC $12.99 specialty listing

Wow. This is a delicious style sauvignon boasting blanced citrus notes on the nose and on the palate. The entry is fresh with lemon and melon fruit and just a hint of lime rind and bell pepper to keep it mouth watering but not bitter. Very agreeable style that just screams for a plate of seafood or grilled citrus chicken. Very impressive for the price.

88 Sauvignon Republic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006

Marlborough, South Island, New Zealand

AB $24.95 private wine shop; US $18.00 Retail

Intense canned asparagus with smoky, mineral, minty notes. On the palate the wine is dry and fresh with a bit of the old-style canned jalapeno, asparagus flavours mixed with lemon-lime and grapefruit. Intense full-blown, peppery sauvignon with a touch of sweet and sour juicy lime rind. Green lipped mussels anyone.

88 Sauvignon Republic Stellenbosch Sauvignon Blanc 2006

Stellenbosch, Coastal Region, South Africa

AB $24.95 private wine shop; US $18.00 estimated price

Wow almost riesling, in sauvignon clothing. Brisk minerality, fresh lemon-lime but not overpowering as Marlborough version cam is. Vibrant chalky mid-palate mixing limes, herbs and grass in the finish. Not as intense as some but that probably contributes to its food friendly styling. Sip all summer on the patio with a wide range of appetizers.

88 Vina Casablanca Nimbus Estate Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2005

Valle de Casablanca, Region de Aconcagua, Chile

BC $17.99 specialty listing

A new listing for Vina Casablanca is the single vineyard sauvignon 'Nimbus Estate'. The nose is aromatic with bits of asparagus (Marlborough) and the citrus minerality of Sancerre. The textures are soft; the flavours offer more lemon and dried herbs with spice and melon. Well done if just a pinch dry in the finish. Cool Casablanca.

88 Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc Private Bin 2007

Marlborough, South Island, New Zealand

BC $18.99 specialty listing

It's not hard to love the intense passion fruit and melon nose with just a touch of jalapeno. It has terrific mid-palate freshness with plenty more melon, guava, and citrus/ granny smith flavours. Intense, yet cool and delicate. Well done for the price and you can serve it with a variety of foods.

87 San Pedro Castillo de Molina Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2006

Valle del Lontué, Valle del Maule, Region del Valle Central, Chile

BC $16.00

This super dry version is across between Marlborough and Casablanca. The nose is extremely pungent with herbal gooseberry jalapeno notes followed by a crisp dry lemony palate. An intense sweaty grapefruit aftertaste follows. Very clean and showy and would be fine with mussels or oysters for dedicated sauvignon blanc fans.

87 Carmen Sauvignon Blanc 2006

Valle del Curicó, Region del Valle Central, Chile

AB $13.50 private wine shops; BC $13.95 specialty listing; NB $12.99; NF $11.98; NS $10.99; PEI $12.98

Carmen winemaker María del Pilar González is doing an excellent job of fine tuning the Carmen varietal range. Sauvignon blanc is the varietal Carmen built a huge following with and after some recent so-so efforts the 2006 is all over the mark. Fresh, clean mineral nose with citrus and melon fruit and now finally closed with a screwcap. It simply doesn't get any better for the money. Ridiculous value here. Drink all spring and summer.

87 Vina Casablanca Sauvignon Blanc Coleccion Privada 2006

Valle de Casablanca, Region de Aconcagua, Chile

BC $14.06 specialty listing

Edition two is as solid as the previous year and it's great value for $14. The nose is clean and fresh with plenty of lifted gooseberry, green apple and lime rind aromas. It's New Zealand for $5 less. Love the balance and freshness here. Perfect seafood/shellfish wine. Drink all summer.

87 Santa Rita Sauvignon Blanc Reserva 2006

Valle de Casablanca, Region de Aconcagua, Chile

AB $12.80 private wine shops; BC $13.99 general listing; MB $11.92; ON $12.45

Bottled under natural cork it's a carbon copy of the '05 with its crisp tight nose of gooseberry and grapefruit rind. Intense fruit flavours coat your palate mixing bell pepper, gooseberry dried herbs and grapefruit. There's no malolactic fermentation and two month lees contact to and a creamy, passion fruit finish. Bring on the shellfish, again. Good value.
