Anthony Gismondi on Wine

The BC wine industry announced 17 new sub-appellations today: two in the Similkameen, four on Vancouver Island, two in the Lower Mainland and nine in the Okanagan Valley.

Speaking for the group was long time grower and terrorist Place Matters. Mr. Matters said it was some of the easiest work he had ever been involved with, 'it was certainly easier than dealing with the BC Wine Authority."

It's going to take consumers a bit of time to adjust to the new sub-divisions because for the first time in a century each wine has a distinct origin and that means they will know exactly where the fruit was grown. Wineries have been dead set against appellations for decades saying if we tell people where the wine comes we will have to make wine that comes from somewhere.

Still, there is no need to panic about immediate change thanks to several grandfather clauses that were invoked to protect any added costs in changing BC Liquor Store CiC signage. Expect full implementation of the new appellation by 2050.
