The awards program is open to all wines that are certified 100 per cent grown, fermented and bottled in Canada.  A record 749 table and fruit wines from 110 wineries in five different provinces were entered, representing a substantial increase from both 2003 and 2004. In the end, the CWA gold standard yielded only 18 gold medalists, with 69 wines earning silver and 166 earning bronze.

Sixteen independent wine writers, educators and sommeliers gathered for five days to blind taste the wines under the direction of Wine Access editors Anthony Gismondi of Vancouver, and David Lawrason of Belleville, Ontario. The judging, which alternates between east and west locations each year, was held in late August at Niagara College near St. Catharines, Ontario.

The Winery of the Year Award is based on consistent performance during the judging; reflecting winemaker Tom Di Bello's proficiency across the winery's portfolio.  "CedarCreek Estate won medals across an array of wine styles, with three golds, two silvers and three bronze medals," said David Lawrason, Canadian Wine Editor of Wine Access magazine.  "And, its remaining three entries each missed bronze by less than a point."

For the second year in a row, Sandhill Small Lots 2003 Syrah Phantom Creek Vineyard, from BC by winemaker Howard Soon was awarded Red Wine of the Year. Upon its release in April, Howard Soon commented that it was a "worthy successor to the 2002" which won top red in last year's Canadian Wine Awards. The 2003 sold out by mid-summer at $29.99.

Wild Goose 2004 Mystic River Gewürztraminer was named White Wine of the Year. This is a consistent award winner for the Kruger family's winery near Okanagan Falls in B.C., and represents great value at only $18.95.

Sweet Wine of the Year went to a debut entry, Nk'Mip Cellars 2004 Riesling Icewine by winemaker Randy Picton in B.C. ($59.99/375ml), while Fruit Wine of the Year was another repeat winner - Southbrook Winery Framboise from Ontario ($14.95/375ml)

British Columbia placed eight out of 10 wineries as finalists for Winery of the Year. Runners up were Jackson-Triggs Okanagan Estate, which won in 2004 and 2003; and Sumac Ridge Estate Winery, which placed a strong third.

When it came to the top wines in each of the style/varietal categories Ontario had its best showing since the Awards were founded in 2001. B.C. wine topped 14 categories with strong performances in the full-bodied red and aromatic white categories, while Ontario topped 13 categories including chardonnay, riesling, pinot noir and most of the sweet and fruit wine categories.

The 27 categories highlight the breadth of winemaking in Canada. The largest categories were Cabernet-Merlot/Meritage blends, Chardonnay Oaked and Merlot. Categories showing the largest increases in 2005 were Unoaked Chardonnay and Syrah/Shiraz.

With the increase in entries and a growing number of talented young sommeliers and wine educators now working in Canada, the number of judges increased this year from ten to sixteen. The new "apprentice" palates included men and women from eastern Canada. Next year, when the judging moves to the Okanagan Valley, a group of new judges will be enlisted from Western Canada.

New this year, the Canadian Wine Awards adopted a sophisticated on-line database to administer all procedures, from winery sign-ups to delivering final reports on the winners.  Designed by Earl Paxton and Robert Baziuk of Vancouver, under the guidance of Wine Access Editor-in-Chief Anthony Gismondi, it provided the capability for each winery to register its wines and administer its own page on-line.

Niagara College, site of the 2005 judging, is slated to become the permanent eastern Canada home for the Canadian Wine Awards. It is one of the most progressive wine and culinary schools in the country; home to Canada's only campus winery and the Niagara Culinary Institute.
