The 2005 Bordeaux are coming. Are you ready for the "Vintage of The Century"? How many times have we heard that before? However, this time the prognosticators may not be that far off the mark. The 2005s are in demand having been on the world market both as futures and at retail for some time now. October 4, 2008 is the delayed release date for "Les Vins de Bordeaux 2005" at Signature BC Liquor Stores. Hope this date is convenient for you to line up and remember those bottle limits. Have fun trying to choose between 175 red selections ranging in price from $19 to $2900 a bottle plus some whites and sweet Sauternes. Forget the recession and falling property prices as the wine market remains very strong as evidenced by a late September auction by Hart Davis Hart in Chicago. The Fox Cellar sold all the lots offered way over estimates with bidders from 40 states and many countries including a seven case lot of 1982 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild for $54,970 by a Chinese bidder in the room against an estimate of low $20,000 to high $30,000. Many expect 2005 to be the next 1982 for the new generation.

Why buy these? I will give you three good reasons:

1. Weather. Ideal sunny weather throughout, dry conditions, and yet cool enough to maintain a good balance of acid, fruit and ripe tannins. The exceptional conditions meant there was less vine disease and crop thinning ensured a concentrated lower yield. The vines adapted better than in the hot drought conditions of 2003 resulting in better "phenolically" ripe grapes with good acidity. This is not a "commercial" vintage and the resulting wines show the terroir of their distinct appellations better than many recent vintages including 2000.

2. Consistency and Versatility. Because the growing conditions were so good in all regions for everybody it was difficult to screw up either in the picking or in the cellar. Accordingly there is great consistency of quality among all the chateaux. In many cases it is also an approachable one for earlier drinking because of the freshness, ripeness and the balance like 1959, 1982, and 1985. However the concentration and structure also ensures a long life a trademark of the great Bordeaux vintages like 1928, 1945, 1947, 1949, 1953, 1959, 1961, 1970, 1989, 1990 and 2000. A win-win situation!

3. Price. Remember these wines were bought as futures by the LDB from Bill Blatch of Vintex in Bordeaux back in 2006. As consumers we seem too often to put up with outrageous prices for wine from our Provincial monopolies. However here we should give them a lot of credit for fair competitive world pricing. After all the newly opened Sutton Place on Burrard first in this market with the retail 2005s was forced to buy them on the open market at already increased prices. Note their price for Pontet-Canet at $310 compared to the LDB $139. Even Marquis Cellars and the astute future buying of John Clerides through the LDB could only provide a price for it on their 2005 offerings release on September 13 at $200.  As you see relatively good deals at the LDB.

So many choices so little time so I will give you my favourite good values in more or less descending order from best to worth a shot. I have left many expensive ones that are truly outstanding off my list because of the higher prices. Remember you can't really go wrong with any of them as this definitely is a vintage of the century. Decide what communes you prefer or just experiment. Regardless of ideal growing conditions some terroirs and some producers just produce better wine year in and year out. The vineyards that have proven to make outstanding wine are always going to be more expensive.
