Anthony Gismondi on Wine

Whistler wine guru Andre St.

Jacques has reported 65 bottles of priceless wine missing from his Bearfoot Bistro wine cabinet. Actually priceless is probably not the word to use since the missing wine is valued at over $200,000.

The Globe Mail reports they included "a collection of vintage Mouton Rothschild Bordeaux from 1946 to 1982, some with labels personally signed by the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Others were signed by some of the artists, including Andy Warhol, who designed the chateau's annual labels. Also on the thieves' exclusive list were 11 vintage bottles from Lafite Rothschild, between 1945 and 1990. The 1945 Lafite was the most expensive of all the wines taken, priced at $7,000."

St. Jacques believes the thieves may have hidden inside the restaurant overnight, then broke the locks and pilfered the wine before staff opened up the next morning. "It has to be someone who knew the restaurant," Mr. St. Jacques said, pausing for a moment or two to assist a customer with his ordered 1959 Dom Pérignon."

As surprising as the theft may seem in a resort with no snow and country with no hockey it would appear to us that a lot of people have a lot of time on their hands.

St. Jacques is offering a $20,000 reward for anyone who finds the wine and the person or persons who took it.
