Viña Marty Goutte D'Argent Pinot Noir 2023

Valle de Leyda, Valle de San Antonio, Region de Aconcagua, ChilePascal Marty, founder of Viña Marty in Chile, worked as a winemaker at Mouton Rothschild, Opus One, and Almaviva, and he's behind this cool-climate Leyda Valley San Antonio pinot noir from Chile. The Goutte d'Argent, or 'silver drop,' is fermented with Japanese sake yeast, specifically sake yeast strains referred to as No. 7 and, more recently, No. 9, and Marty is said to have spent years negotiating access to these yeasts and claims to be the only non-Japanese winemaker granted access through Japanese sake-production connections. The key is that they are highly effective at exceptionally low temperatures (below 6°C) 6C) versus other strains of yeast. They can preserve acidity, influence lower alcohol levels, and alter texture and mouthfeel. The 2024 is fermented in stainless steel over 30-40 days at around 6°C, followed by 12 months on fine lees in stainless steel with regular stirring. The result is a very pure pinot, with a pale pink-orange colour. The texture is lightweight and silky smooth, but there is some flavour intensity and complexity here. Quiet notes of cherry, strawberry, rose petals, and subtle florals abound, with refined tannins, gentle acidity, and a perfect touch of spice. The finish is clean, if a bit short overall, and it's a very interesting start on a style that will be widely welcomed. Elegance is the word here. Looking forward to ongoing releases. Fine value too.Tasted: 04 September 2026Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
