Gérard Bertrand An 806 2023

Corbières, Languedoc, Sud de France, FranceWines that are affordable and fun to drink but still have something to say are not easy to make or find. At Bertrand, the 806 mix is grenache, syrah, and mourvèdre grown in the renowned Corbières region, where geological diversity, including schist, limestone, and rolled pebbles, is ancient and everywhere. The difference is the winemaking. Every bunch is hand harvested, and during fermentation, the syrah undergoes 10 to 18 days of carbonic maceration that plumps up the fruit. At the same time, the grenache and mourvèdre are destemmed and traditionally fermented. The result, aged 8 months in quality French oak, is a ripe, suave, black fruited wine with mineral limestone streaks that keep it from being flabby. The result is a silky, easy to drink red for an everyday meal. The 806 reference refers to Château de Peyrepertuse, a dramatic medieval castle perched atop a limestone ridge in the Corbières region of Aude.
