Crystallum The Agnes Chardonnay 2024

Western Cape, South AfricaBrothers Andrew and Peter-Allan Finlayson are 3rd generation winemakers and the sons of Peter, who pioneered Pinot Noir in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley, founding Hamilton Russel Vineyards. Crystallum is their personal project since 2007. The Agnes Chardonnay comes off several vineyards in the Hemel-en-Aarde and Overberg regions. with soils ranging from heavy clay to shale, sandstone, and quartz. This whole cluster chardy went straight into press, with juice racked off the following day into 228 and 500L French oak for a native ferment, followed by 9 months rest. Layered with crystalline lemon, green apple, verbena, white peach, and downy lees, this extends long on the medium bodied palate, textured with crushed stones, touched with oak, kissed with flint, and lingering with salinity. Though this wine has ample presence, it's also confidently quiet on its feet, showing beauty now but with ample time ahead under a Diam10 cork.
