Elephant Island Think Again Merlot 2020
Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis 100% estate-grown, Nuttall Road Vineyard merlot is the kind of merlot we should be making all over the mid- and southern Okanagan. Maybe not at 15.5 percent alcohol, but in 2020, given the acclaimed vintage and the wine's balance, it's more fun to drink than not. Friendly is a good term, or, as the winery has said, "If a velvet smoking jacket and a slow-burning stare could be bottled, this would be it." Indeed, the brown-orange brooding colour and spicy black-cherry fruit are on full display from the opening nose, through the lifted black-cherry and dark-plum fruit framed by sweet oak spices and tertiary notes of cedar and earth, to the final descent. It is ready to drink. The fruit is farmed by Del and Miranda Halladay on the Naramata Bench. They farm it sustainably with rotational grazing, cover cropping, and no systemic herbicides or pesticides. They age it for 15 months in French oak. Fans of classic Bordeaux will find a lot to like here, making you Think Again indeed.
