Elephant Island Reserve Meritage 2021

Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis generous Bench Meritage features an 82.5/11.5/6 mix of merlot, cabernet franc, and cabernet sauvignon, packed with plump candied cherry, dried herbs, and a lot of cigar box spice. Again, the alcohol is over 15 percent when it probably doesn't need to be, not that there isn't a market for big, rich reds, but it subtly has its moments too. The tannins are dense and well-managed, and you can drink this wine now or wait for it to mature further in the bottle through 2028. The winery suggests pairing it with slow braised beef short ribs with forest mushrooms, or wild mushroom risotto with aged parmesan.
