Château Pesquié Silica Rouge 2023
Ventoux, Southern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceSilica is 90% grenache with a drop of Cinsault, all from 82-87 year old vines, Demeter certified since 2015, this is planted over sandy soil mixed with limestone, gravel, and silica. Fermentation is done in a mix of concrete eggs and concrete tanks using native yeasts, and the wine is aged 12 to 15 months in a 75/25 mix of 600L oak and a cement egg before bottling. Frederick Chaudière says the concrete eggs have enhanced the wine's salinity and floral notes, leading to silkier textures. At its base, it is still a giant grenache pitching black raspberries and white pepper, pursuing power and finesse. There is a touch of Bourgogne here, but it will need some extra time in the cellar before it is ready for prime time. Impressive and well worth investigating. If you didn't know, silicon is a natural element found in sandstone, clay, and granite, and it is plentiful in the Earth's crust. It has been recently classified as a quasi-essential, or beneficial, element for agriculture. It plays a vital part in biodynamic treatments because of its significant benefits on crops.
