Suavia Soave Classico Monte Carbonare 2023

Monte Carbonare, Verona, Veneto, ItalyThe last time GOW tasted this wine was in 2003, 23 years ago. This distinctively bottled Soave Classico continues to impress, a testament to commitment and understanding the garganega grape, and the region's volcanic soils. From the UGA Carbonare, at 280m, the vines (averaging 60 years) are rooted in black basalt, trained in the traditional pergola Veronese method due to the grape's inherently long bunches. This was fermented in stainless, with no MLF, where it remained for 1 year on fine lees prior to bottling, and another 6 months in bottle prior to release. Pouring a pale lemon hue, this streams white florals, meadow grass, almond, and fresh sage long the weighted palate, with shining lemon acidity and an alluring buzzy underlay lingering on the saline finish. A serious wine, with heft, but freshness, and ample purity. Crack into with crab, spot prawns, or green risotto, or tuck away in your cellar for a bit to watch the honeyed notes grow.Tasted: 19 June 2026Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
