Inama Carménère Piu 2023
Veneto, ItalyA carménère from Italy's Veneto region is something I have never seen, but one quick taste has made me an instant fan. Carménère can be an exciting wine when it's ripe, but that is not a common occurrence in Chile, where it is a major grape. Inama is renowned for its carménère, and it is easy to see why when you smell the fragrant red and black fruit, supported by a mineral undertone, softish tannins, and more savoury pepper, with just a touch of youthful tannins. The wine is a delicious, peppery 70/30 blend of carménère and merlot at a modest 13.5% alcohol, making it a great food wine. The fruit is sourced from iron-rich red clay and limestone soils at elevations ranging from 50 to 150 metres. The wine aged for 12 months, with approximately 25% in previously used barriques, and 75% in stainless steel before final blending and bottling.
