Mullineux Roundstone Schist Syrah 2022

Swartland, Coastal Region, South AfricaOne of ZA's top champions and saviours of old vines, wife / husband Andrea (winemaker) and Chris (viticulturist) Mullineux are known for their wide range of terroir expressive wines. From their home Roundstone farm, on the slopes of Kasteelberg, this is a lens of a single grape on a single site, refracting syrah on schist. The challenging conditions yield smaller vine size and grapes, resulting in more concentration. This was foot crushed into 500L French barrels for natural ferment and 4 weeks maceration. It was racked and pressed to the same barrels where it remained 1 year (50% new), before moving to 2000L foudre before bottling unfiltered. Smoked stones, tar, and graphite are woven through the dense black fruit, scented with violets, blueberries, and cracked peppercorn, and wrapped with firm, compact tannins that structure this through the lingering smoked stone finish. There's an easy swell of lofted stony acidity that keeps this fresh and cellar-solid. A very special wine of place.Tasted: 22 May 2026Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
