De Martino Viejas Tinajas Tinto 2024
Itata Valley, ChileThis wine really launched De Martino and Itata on the world wine map when the first vintage in 2011 was released. They found used and abandoned tinajas, handmade clay jars of varying shapes and sizes, while driving through vineyards in southern Chile and decided to try these for making wine, as their ancestors did. They have approximately 150 of these vessels in their care, averaging 150 years each. Now called Tinto, this cinsault comes from a single vineyard in coastal Itata's granite and quartz soils, planted in 1982, own-rooted and dry farmed. Most bunches are destemmed, with 40% whole bunch for a semi-carbonic native ferment in the tinajas. After 20 days or so, the wine is removed, the tinajas cleaned, and wine returned over the winter for MLF. It was bottled unfiltered and unfined. Fragrant plum, wild blackberry, boysenberry is wrapped with long, fine black tea tannis, and scented with pink peppercorn. Beautiful simplicity and authenticity. 3000ish bottles annually.Tasted: 29 May 2026Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:| BC | $48.00 | 750ml | private wine shops |
