Villota Viña Gena Viñedo Singular 2021
Rioja Alavesa, Rioja, SpainVillota is a fourth generation family owned winery, established almost 100 years ago in Rioja Alavesa. They co-founded and supplied grapes to Contino, Rioja's first single estate winery with CVNE, before they decided to focus on their own name and brand in 2013. This is a Viñedo Singular, a relatively new classification for single vineyard, old vine wines. This dry farmed bush vine tempranillo was planted in 1930, in Laserna's sandy soils, close to the Ebro. Destemmed berries were native fermented in concrete with skins over 18 days before moving to 500L French puncheon for MLF and aging. It remained there (50% new) for 14 months, followed by 3 months in concrete. Crushed florals and crushed stones mingle on the medium bodied palate, surrounded with jammy plums, fragrant boysenberry, and scrubby herbs. Tannins are finely grippy and structural, kissed with concrete's rasp and seasoned subtly with toast. Very graceful, and an entirely different, fresh lens with which to view tempranillo.Tasted: 11 March 2026Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:| BC | $76.00 | 750ml | private wine stores |
