Alheit Vineyards Cartology 2024
Western Cape, South AfricaChris Alheit is one of South Africa's top winemakers and old vine rescuers, working closely with the Old Vine Project to preserve the country's OV heritage, and making expressive wines of place, like this. This is the cuvée that first propelled Alheit Vineyards and Chris (aka Butch) into the stratosphere. From the same vineyard building blocks as the inaugural vintage, this blend of 40-60 year old vine 92/8 chenin blanc / semillon is still on point. The goal of Cartology, the study of maps, according to Alheit was “to make a very Cape wine from very Cape vineyards.” The chenin is sourced from bush vines off nine parcels in Skurfberg, Perdeberg, Bottelary, False Bay and Botrivier. The Semillon comes from the old La Colline block in Franschhoek. All was native fermented in cement eggs, old foudres, and old barrels, lasting between 3 weeks - 11 months. The blended wine kept on lees for 12 months, then moved to tank on fine lees for 5 months. Pear skin, quince, crystalline lemon, and verbena streak across the humming palate, kissed with flax, and textured with a finely grippy buzz through a lingering saline finish.
