Dalkeith Jakkalsfontein Syrah 2023

Swartland, Coastal Region, South AfricaDalkeith is a sister project to Jackson Family Wines' Capensis project in South Africa, a line entirely devoted to Chardonnay. Winemaker Graham Weerts gets to investigate other grapes, namely Syrah and Chenin Blanc, with Dalkeith. A close friendship with Adi Badenhorst kicked off this project, with Weerts sourcing Dalkeith's grapes from two of Adi's vineyards (Adi was Graham’s best man at his wedding, so we can safely assume the pedigree of fruit). This Syrah comes from Jakkalsfontein vineyard, was destemmed and cold soaked for 3 days before inoculation and another 10 days of ferment prior to pressing into older barrels for 9 months. The wine was blended and lightly filtered before bottling later in 2023. Pouring a dusky purple hue, this fleshy red reflects the Swartland's sunshine, with ripe plum, perfumed boysenberry, wild blackberry, and black olive tapenade on the 13.5% palate, hugged with sticky sueded tannins, and lingering with smoked peppercorns. A smartly polished and friendly version to introduce the wildness of Swartland syrah.Tasted: 12 February 2026Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
