Mazzella Paterico 2020

Campania, ItalyGian Luca Mazzella is a former theology student turned wine journalist who returned to his family's roots in Campania to make wines that he dreamt of. In 2019, he bought new plots in the village of Paternopoli, planted vines at an altitude of 430 meters, and built a small wine cellar. He also took care to source old vineyards of aglianico, at 530m on limestone and tuff, releasing his first (and only cuvée), Paterico. These old vines (up to 111 years) were native fermented whole berry, macerated for up to 4 months in untoasted oak barrels, where it remains for 4 years prior to bottling, unfiltered. Intoxicatingly perfumed, with dusky purple florals and balsam infiltrating a pure black plum and wild blackberry core, framed with long, finely grippy tannins, and lit with a humming acidity that streams this through an iris and white pepper scented finish. Hugely cohesive now, at a very welcome and finessed 13.5%, and with ample time ahead. This is a wild beauty. 3992 bottles.Tasted: 07 January 2026Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
