Villota Tinto 2021

Rioja Alavesa, Rioja, SpainThe Villota Tinto is a striking expression mainly of tempranillo, blended with 13% graciano and 2% garnacha, all aged in French oak (33% new). This wine stands apart from many previous Rioja offerings. The traditional oaky red style has disappeared, replaced by a lively red fruit profile with a flawless texture and subtle aromatics. It offers a dense concentration and an inviting blueberry palate that intrigues from start to finish. If this wine were from Champagne, Bordeaux, or Burgundy, it would command three times the price. The fruit is hand harvested from old bush vine tempranillo and graciano vines, now aged 45 to 90 years. Each variety ferments separately, and the wine then ages for 16 months in fine grained French oak, followed by a few additional months in concrete before bottling. For 50 years, the Pérez Villota family supplied grapes to CVNE until 2013, when they decided to separate and create their own family named winery, Villota.Tasted: 12 December 2025Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
